Mouthrinse Facts

Posted Sep 20 2017

Mouthrinse is an oral hygiene tool that can help you achieve the strong and successful oral health and smile you deserve. It can complete the smile-cleaning job and freshen your breath. To help you know a little more about this beneficial liquid, our dentist, Dr. Michele S Tratos, is happy to share some facts with you.

First, some mouthrinses are for cosmetic use only. This means they are only meant to improve the appearance of your teeth or freshen your breath. Although these are great characteristics, the rinses don’t quite improve your oral health. So, please use rinses that are antibacterial or fluoridated. It’s also best to use a rinse that has been approved by the American Dental Association. That way you know the rinse is safe and effective for use.

Second, it’s best to rinse after you have brushed and flossed. This is because your rinse isn’t meant to thoroughly clean your teeth and gums, which means you can’t replace your brushing and flossing techniques with rinsing. Rinsing can free loosened food particles, but it mostly strengthens the teeth and kills harmful bacteria.

Third, rinses with high levels of alcohol can make rinsing unpleasant. These rinses usually have 18 to 26 percent of alcohol. When you use these rinses, you usually feel a stinging sensation in the gums and cheeks. Fortunately, not every rinse has alcohol, so you can use a non-alcoholic rinse if you would like. It won’t make that much of a difference when it comes to helping your smile.
